Umrangso

Umrangso (Pron: ʊˈmrəʊŋˌsəʊ) is an industrial town and a town area committee in Dima Hasao district in the state of Assam, India. It is located at the border of Assam and Meghalaya states some 112 km from Haflong, the district headquarters of Dima Hasao district of Assam.

The name "Umrongso" is derived from the Khasi language of locally Pnar dialect, which means "red colour water"("UM" meaning "WATER" and "RONGSO" meaning "RED COLOUR")

The region has been deeply affected by factional violence involving several armed insurgent groups fighting among themselves and with the Indian Security Forces. Since 2011 there has been a decrease in violence following arrests of several high-ranking insurgent leaders and a cease-fire agreement with the Indian Government.

The town of Umrangso has a number of big industries such as Kopili Hydro Electric Project of Nepco, along with a few cement factories such as NECEM cements, Vinay cements, etc. The town is a beautiful one with abundance of hills and lush greenery. This is an ideal place to spend a few relaxing days amidst the bounty of the nature. There are a few local eateries, which serve fish and meat to the tourists, though stand-alone restaurants are hard to find. The growth of tourism in the area is a little bit affected by the political situation of the area.

The breathtaking view of the area is the main attraction to the tourist who visit Umrangso. The Hydro Electricity project is also important, and thus visitors also visit the Kopili project. Moreover, there are Garampani (Hotwater) springs; streams with water with medicinal benefits, which is generally flocked by a good number of tourists. The nearby town of Diphu is another added attraction, and houses a botanical garden.

Since this place is situated in the sub tropical region, the summer in this area is quite harsh. The hot and humid weather of summer is followed by incessant rain which makes travelling almost impossible. The best time of year to visit this place is during winter to spring. From October itself the weather becomes cool and comfortable for travelling.
